The Fiumarella is a typical Fiumara that drains the surface water from a part of the Sila Mountains in the north of Catanzaro without a specific source and therefore dries out in summer, but can become a raging river in winter when there is sufficient rainfall.
In addition to Catanzaro , which lies on a ridge, the Fiumarella has formed a deeply cut gorge, which is bridged by the Ponte Bisantis at a height of 112 m .
The only 20 km long Fiumarella flows into the Ionian Sea at Catanzaro Lido .
It corresponds to the ancient Zaro .
In the last century her name became known through the railway accident on the Fiumarella Viaduct on December 23, 1961.
