Guardavalle is an Italian city ​​in the province of Catanzaro in Calabria with 4410 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Guardavalle is located 64 km south of Catanzaro on the eastern slope of the Serre not far from the coast of the Ionian Sea . The neighboring communities are Bivongi ( RC ), Brognaturo ( VV ), Monasterace (RC), Santa Caterina dello Ionio , Stilo (RC).

history

Guardavalle was probably founded in the 9th century by people who fled the Saracen attacks on the surrounding hills. It then belonged to the fiefdom of Stilo and shared its fate. Over the centuries it was subordinate to the Normans , the Hohenstaufen , the Anjou , the Aragonese , the Spanish and the Bourbons, one after the other, until it was incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy (1860) . In 1799 the place was declared an autonomous municipality by General Jean-Étienne Championnet .

Attractions

The Tuscan Tower, part of a fortified residential complex from the 16th century, is worth seeing. Many houses have baroque elements. In the church of S. Agazio there is a wooden crucifix from the 17th century.
