The Taranto – Reggio di Calabria railway line (also called Ferrovia Jonica in Italian) is a 472 km long railway line in southern Italy . It runs more or less along the Ionian coast from Taranto through Apulia , Basilicata and Calabria to Reggio di Calabria .

history

The construction of the line was started in 1865 by the Società Vittorio Emanuele, which went bankrupt in 1872 and thus before the line was completed. The line was subsequently completed by the Rete Adriatica . Since the nationalization of the Rete Adriatica, it has been operated by the FS .

Until the opening of the Salerno – Reggio di Calabria railway , the line was the only connection to the southern tip of Italy. After that line was expanded, however, it quickly lost its importance.

The line between Taranto and Sibari has been electrified since November 13, 1989; this should enable continuous electric trains to Cosenza . However, at the moment (as of August 2016), at least not for passenger traffic.

For the construction of the "S-Bahn" Reggio di Calabria, the section Reggio di Calabria - Melito di Porto Salvo was later electrified and expanded to double track. On February 21, 2013 the “Reggio Calabria Aeroporto” stop was opened near the airport . In addition, the offer was supplemented on June 9, 2013 with the new “Annà di Melito di Porto Salvo” stop.

An electrification of the section between Melito di Porto Salvo and Sibari is in the project phase.

Today's operation

Today (as of August 2016) the route is only sparsely used on certain sections; only one IC pair drives continuously. Regional trains no longer run between Trebisacce and Metaponto.
