Caulonia is an Italian city and municipality in the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria in Calabria with 7091 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Caulonia is located 121 km northeast of Reggio Calabria on the eastern slope of the Serre . The neighboring municipalities are Nardodipace (VV), Pazzano , Placanica , Roccella Ionica , Stignano . The height of the village is 298 m slm; the highest point is the Monte Gremi mountain, 1210 m slm high.

The districts Agromastelli, Campoli, Crochi, Cufò, Focà, Marina di Caulonia, San Nicola, Ursini and Ziia belong to the city. Marina di Caulonia is shaped by tourism and invites you to practice water sports.

Attractions

There are ruins of a castle in the village. The church of S. Zaccaria dates back to the Middle Ages, but has been renovated.

The archaeological site of Caulonia or Kaulon is located in the municipality of Monasterace . Walls and other traces of the ancient Greek city still stand . The finds that were discovered here are exhibited in the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia in Reggio Calabria.

Factions and villages

In Caulonia there are five parliamentary groups and other isolated houses, but they all have a name like the parliamentary groups. The fractions of Caulonia are Marina di Caulonia , Focà , Ursini , Campoli - Agromastelli and San Nicola - Pirarelli.

The isolated houses include Rivetto, Vipari, Colle del mastro, Fratelleri, Crochi, Furca, Gremi, Filicusa, Caloieri, Stramerca, Ficara, Gangalo, Carpinuso, Tuzzo, Cantile, Vignali, Cugliaraso, Migliuso, Vaccarizzo, Tre Donne, Sorgente, Limbia, Anoia, Belvedere, Casavetere, Vincilago, Calamandre, Santa Domenica, Vallone Percia, Ziia, Zomino, Marano, Casiglie, Donna Cecca, Frauzzo, Carrubbara - Liserà, Dimilio, Abatigiala, Calatria, Popelli, Gozza, Pezzolo, Obile, Strano - Cufò, Candidati, Barone and Stefano. Some of these places still exist, but they are often uninhabited. Usually no more than 40 people live in such places.
