Mammola is an Italian city in the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria in Calabria with 2648 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Mammola is 91 km northeast of Reggio Calabria . The place is on the northeast side of the Aspromonte on a hill. The neighboring municipalities are Agnana Calabra , Canolo , Cinquefrondi , Galatro , Giffone , Grotteria , San Giorgio Morgeto and Siderno . The districts are Borgo Chiusa, San Todaro, Aspalmo, Neblà, Russo, Acone, Malafrinà, Piani di Canalo, Cerasara, San Filippo and Sansone.

Mammola station was the terminus of the narrow-gauge railway line Gioiosa Jonica – Mammola .

history

The place has been inhabited since the time of Magna Graecia and its origin goes back to the 5th to 4th century BC. BC back. The settlement arose on the ruins of Malèa (Μαλέα in ancient Greek), a colony of the ancient city of Locri Epizefiri, mentioned by Thucydides . The settlement was further developed in the late 10th century, between 950 and 986 AD, in order to be able to avoid the attacks of the Saracens on the coast.

The village owes the name of the stockfish village to the Stocco because of its artisanal processing and watering in high-quality spring water . The Sagra dello Stocco (Stockfish Festival) has been held here every August 9th since 1978 .
