politics

Carlo Martelli ( FI ) was elected Mayor in June 2006. His center-right alliance also made up the majority in the local council with 12 out of 20 seats. Martelli and other members of the city government were arrested in October 2008 for links with the mafia organization 'Ndrangheta . Since then, the municipality has been governed by a commission appointed by the regional president under the leadership of the acting mayor Domenico Bagnato.

Rosarno is one of the strongholds of the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta. Some important clans such as the Bellocco and Pesce families have their base in Rosarno.

After young people, including the son of a 'Ndrangheta chief, shot at returning African seasonal workers from work with air rifles and seriously injured two people on January 7, 2010, serious unrest broke out between immigrants and parts of the local population, including 67 people were injured and serious property damage occurred. As a result, a large number of the immigrants were taken by the police to reception centers in other southern Italian cities or left the city on their own. In the Rosarno area, up to 5,000 immigrants were employed, mostly illegally, as seasonal agricultural workers. Although they only received a daily wage of around 25 euros, many also had to pay so-called "protection money" to the 'Ndrangheta. As early as 2008, the organization Doctors Without Borders informed about the inhumane housing of the immigrants.

On January 11, 2010, a demonstration against racism took place in Rosarno with 5000 participants, residents and immigrants.

Attractions

There is a ruin of a castle in the village . Also worth seeing are the small clock tower and the parish church.
