The Königswartha – Weißkollm railway was a main line in what is now the Free State of Saxony , which was designed as part of a long-distance connection from Bautzen to Cottbus . The line, which was closed in 2002, ran from Königswartha to Weißkollm . Today only the section between the alternative connection point Caminau and the station Knappenrode exists as a connecting line of the kaolin factory Caminau .

history

The first projects for a railway line from Bautzen or Löbau in the direction of Cottbus were already in place in the middle of the 19th century . However, the disinterest of Prussia at the time prevented their realization. The old project was only taken up again in connection with the expansion of lignite mining in what was once Prussian Upper Lusatia and the establishment of the Schwarze Pump combine after the Second World War .

On November 6, 1956, the new connection from Knappenrode to Schwarze Pump was put into operation. Shortly thereafter, the route of the new main line began, which, starting from Königswartha near Knappenrode, crossed the Węgliniec – Roßlau line and joined the Knappenrode – Schwarze Pump line at the new Weißcollm station. A short connecting curve at Knappenrode was provided for direct trains between Bautzen and Hoyerswerda. The new line went into operation in several stages:

  • October 4, 1959: Knappenrode – Knappenrode Süd
  • October 2, 1960: Knappenrode Süd – Abzw Weißkollm
  • September 1, 1961: Königswartha – Knappenrode Süd

On September 1, 1961, passenger train traffic from Bautzen to Hoyerswerda was also started via the new connection. From May 24, 1963, the continuous rail line between Bautzen and Cottbus was completed with the newly built Spreewitz – Graustein railway line . In addition to the connection to the coal railway in Knappenrode Süd, there was already a siding to the Caminau kaolin factory when it opened . Already at the turn of the century this had demanded a rail connection to the connection between Bautzen and Hoyerswerda, which was built at the time, but was not obtained for various reasons.

The Koblenz stop was established on May 30, 1965. From May 26, 1968, all passenger trains between Bautzen and Hoyerswerda ran on the new route. The old route via Wittichenau was abandoned in 1973. After the political change in eastern Germany in 1990, the route quickly lost its importance for travel and freight traffic. On May 30, 1999, the tourist traffic was stopped, in the freight traffic soon only the kaolin factory in Caminau was served.

The Knappenrode Süd – Abzw Weißkollm section was closed on October 30, 2000. On July 19, 2001, the closure of the line (Bautzen–) Königswartha – Knappenrode Süd – Knappenrode was approved by the Federal Railway Authority ; It was completed on May 31, 2002. At the same time, the Awanst Caminau – Knappenrode track was converted into a siding at Knappenrode station. Freight traffic to the Caminau kaolin plant still takes place once a day. (As of 2019)
