The Spreewitz – Graustein railway is a main line in the Free State of Saxony , which was originally designed as part of a long-distance connection from Bautzen to Cottbus . It branches off the Knappenrode – Sornoer Buden railway at Spreewitz and joins the Berlin – Görlitz railway at Graustein . Apart from the former alternative connection point Nochten, there are no operating points serving public transport on the route .

history

The Spreewitz – Graustein line was opened on May 24, 1963. On April 20, 1965, a connecting curve between the Graustein Süd junction set up on this line and the Graustein East junction on the Berlin – Görlitz railway line was put into operation, and with it the connection Towards Weißwasser.

So that trains could run directly between Graustein and Knappenrode, the connection between the Spreewitz North and Spreewitz South junctions was opened on April 1, 1967. Passenger trains on this route almost always continued in the direction of Knappenrode – Hoyerswerda. Around 1970 there was a direct excursion train on weekends from Cottbus to Bautzen for a few years.

The connecting curve between the branch points Graustein Süd and Graustein Ost was shut down by the Deutsche Reichsbahn on December 1, 1992 , and the associated points were expanded. On May 15, 1995, the 1.6 kilometer long connecting curve between the Spreewitz train station and the Spreewitz Nord junction was shut down by DB Netz AG after the Federal Railway Authority had approved this on March 3, 1995. These branch switches have also been removed.

After the restructuring and the transfer of travel to the federal states or special purpose associations, the regional train line RB 47 Hoyerswerda – Cottbus ran the route on behalf of the Verkehrsverbund Oberelbe (VVO) and the Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB). Despite considerable protests, the VVO ceased traffic on December 11, 2004; most recently there were nine pairs of passenger trains a day. Since then there has been no regular passenger traffic on this route.
