Cittanova is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) in the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria in Calabria . The municipality is located about 47 kilometers northeast of Reggio Calabria and about 36 kilometers south of Vibo Valentia . Cittanova is one of the parishes of the Piana di Gioia Tauro . It is on the edge of the Parco nazionale dell'Aspromonte .

history

As the name Cittanova as New City already suggests, it is a very young start-up. In 1618, after a devastating earthquake in the seismically very active region in 1616, the small town of Nuovo Casale di Curtuladi became Castelnuovo . And finally, with the conferment of the status of Città to Cittanova . In the following, or the great earthquake of 1783 was also Cittanova destroyed.

Economy and Transport

Cittanova is located on a downgraded section of the former Strada Statale 111 (today: Strada Provinciale 1 ) from Gioia Tauro to Locri . A small station is located on the narrow-gauge railway (950 mm gauge ) operated by Ferrovia Calabria from Gioia Tauro to Cinquefrondi .
