The earthquake in Messina occurred on February 5, 1783. The first series of earthquakes occurred between February 2 and 9, 1783, followed by further aftershocks up to March 28, 1783. In addition to Messina , there were a number of other towns in Sicily and Calabria suffered severe destruction. The cause was tectonic processes in the Messina fault .
