Ardore is an Italian city ​​in the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria in Calabria with 5028 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

The station

Ardore is 95 km east of Reggio Calabria . The neighboring municipalities are Benestare , Bovalino , Ciminà , Platì and Sant'Ilario dello Ionio . The place is on the east side of the Aspromonte , about 5 km away from the coast of the Ionian Sea .

history

The place was owned by the Gerace family until 1555. In 1783 the place was damaged by an earthquake. There is a pilgrimage church on the territory of the municipality.

Attractions

There is a ruin of a castle in the village. There is a Roman sarcophagus in the church of S. Leonardo .

The monastery and the church of Santa Maria della Grotta are located in the district of Bombile. The church is dug into the tuff . The construction is documented in 1502, the exact year of construction is not known. The church is now a pilgrimage church .
