The Děčín – Chomutov railway is a regional railway connection in the Czech Republic , which was originally built and operated by the kk priv. Dux-Bodenbacher Eisenbahn (DBE). The route, which is only partially in operation today, begins in Děčín ( Bodenbach ) and runs parallel to the Ore Mountains via Teplice ( Teplitz ), Litvínov ( Oberleutensdorf ) and Jirkov ( Görkau ) to Chomutov ( Komotau ). The Litvínov – Jirkov section was closed in 1971 because of an open-cast brown coal mine.

According to a decree of the Czech government, the Děčín – Litvínov line has been classified as a regional railway ("regionální dráha") since December 20, 1995.

history

On July 9, 1869, the Dux-Bodenbacher Bahn was allowed to build a railway line from Bodenbach to Dux with a branch line to Komotau. On May 20, 1871, the Bodenbach – Osseg line and on to Liptitz near Dux was opened. On December 19, 1872, the Osseg – Komotau extension was put into operation.

Telnice railway station (2014)

In preparation for the planned nationalization of the DBE, operational management of the line was transferred to the kk Österreichische Staatsbahnen (kkStB) from July 1, 1884 . The Dux-Bodenbacher Bahn was not finally nationalized until January 1st, 1894.

The summer timetable of 1912 included five daily 1st to 3rd class passenger trains. They needed about three hours for the entire route from Bodenbach to Komotau.

After the collapse of Austria-Hungary in October 1918, the route was transferred to the newly founded Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD).

At the beginning of the 1920s, coal exports from Czechoslovakia to Germany fell to a minimum following a change in freight tariffs for shipping on the Elbe. In 1923 shipping on the Elbe and thus coal exports ceased entirely. After the nationalization of the Aussig-Teplitz Railway (ATE), from 1924 all coal traffic was shifted from the North Bohemian Basin to the cheaper Komotau – Aussig line . The Komotau – Bodenbach connection thus lost a substantial part of its traffic and was in fact degraded to a branch line. In this context, on May 15, 1926, a new connecting line was opened between Unter Haan and Ullersdorf station. This led to a traffic separation of the route into the relations Bodenbach-Ossegg and Teplitz-Schönau-Komotau, which from then on was also reflected in the timetables.

Teplice lesní brána station (2014)

From 1933, the ČSD began using modern motorized trains on most of the passenger trains , which on the one hand enabled a significant reduction in travel times and a significant consolidation of the timetable. In the winter timetable of 1937 there was only one continuous pair of passenger trains between Bodenbach and Komotau, most of the journeys ended in Ossegg. Seven pairs of passenger trains ran between Bodenbach and Osseg, eight between Teplitz-Schönau and Komotau. Other trains ran on partial routes.

After the Sudetenland was annexed to Germany in autumn 1938, the line came to the Deutsche Reichsbahn , Reichsbahndirektion Dresden . In the realm course book the connection was among the timetable routes 166a Bodenbach-Ossegg and 166b Teplice-Ossegg-Komotau included. After the end of the Second World War , the line came back to the ČSD.

On January 9, 1961, the section between Teplice lesní brána and Háj u Duchcova was closed. Since then, a new line has also been connecting the line from Děčín directly to the Oldřichov u Duchcova station. Since May 28, 1964, the line between Oldřichov u Duchcova and Louka u Litvínova has been electrified with 3 kV direct current.

The ČSD operated the entire line until 1971, then the section between Litvínov and Jirkov was closed because of an open-cast brown coal mine. Passenger train traffic only took place between Děčín and Litvínov. Since September 28, 1997, passenger trains have been running again between Chomutov and Jirkov.

The passenger trains to Oldřichov u Duchcova always ran from stump track 1B in Děčín (2007)

With the timetable change on December 9, 2007, the passenger train service on the section Děčín – Oldřichov u Duchcova (KBS 132) was canceled by the responsible Ústecký kraj . The main reason given for the discontinuation was the low utilization of the trains. The re-establishment of direct local trains between Děčín and Chomutov via Ústí nad Labem was also used as an argument in favor of discontinuing regular passenger traffic. In the meantime, the use of the railway line for a motorway feeder to the new D8 near Ústí nad Labem was under discussion.

"Kozí dráha" in Jílové u Děčína (2014)

Since October 13, 2009, three pairs of passenger trains have been running again between Děčín and Oldřichov u Duchcova on weekends. The operator was Railtrans .

As in 2014, several pairs of trains ran between Děčín hl.n. on selected weekends in July and August in 2015. and Telnice. These trips were offered under the marketing name "Kozí dráha" (goat train) , the responsible railway company was Rail system sro

Since December 14, 2015, the line between Děčín hl.n. západ and Telnice closed. The reason for this is the unstable rock face and there fallen sandstone blocks in the cut between the route kilometers 2.5 and 2.7.

The 13-kilometer route from Oldřichov u Duchcova to Litvínov is to be completely renewed from December 2018 for a total of 898.9 million crowns. Part of the project is also the electrification of the two-kilometer section Louka u Litvínova – Litvínov. After completion of the work in April 2021, the trains on the U24 line from Ústí nad Labem via Teplice v Čechách to Litvínov will be connected.

For April 9, 2020, the municipality of Telnice has ordered two pairs of passenger trains from the KŽC Doprava railway company for the Děčín hl.n. – Telnice route. As of September 2019, they are also included in the draft of the SŽDC's 2020 annual timetable. According to the mayor of Telnice, Jan Doubrava, it is an attempt to find out whether the state infrastructure management can restore the route to an operational state in the short term.

The state infrastructure administration puts the financial cost of repairing the damage to the route at around 100 million crowns. A short-term restart is not possible due to stolen system components. In spring 2020, the vegetation that has grown up on the track between Telnice and Oldřichov u Duchcova will first be removed, and the serviceable repair of the line between Teplice Lesní brána and Oldřichov u Duchcova is planned.
