history

The place Eulow is first mentioned in 1348 in a document from Emperor Charles IV . The settlement on an old trade route, however, happened much earlier.

Whether the battle of Chlumec took place on February 18, 1126 here and not near Chlumec is not verifiable. However, the 511.8 m high Lotarův vrch ( Lotterberg , also Lotharberg ) located 2 km to the east is believed to be a possible location for the victorious battles of Sobieslav I over the army of Lothar III. and Otto II .

The market town has its origins in a water castle first mentioned in 1554, later Eulau Castle. The castle was initially owned by the lords of Lípa and belonged to their Lípa castle and, after the castle was sold, to the Blankenstein lordship . In the 16th century, the Bünauer new owners of Eulau, who built a sideline here. After the defeat in the Battle of the White Mountain, their entire Bohemian property was confiscated and in 1629 the Counts of Thun (after 1648 von Thun-Hohenstein ) on Tetschen also received control over Eulau. In the 17th century, the Counts of Thun-Hohenstein converted the castle into a palace, to which a park was later created. As a result of the Battle of Kulm in 1813, parts of Eulau were destroyed.

In 1842 a cotton mill was set up in the castle, which produced until 1922. In 1932 the Counts of Thun-Hohenstein had the castle rebuilt and moved into the neo-renaissance building . They were expropriated in April 1946.

In 1871 the Dux-Bodenbacher Railway was built in the valley of the Eulaubach . Before the Second World War , almost 3,000 people lived here. There were numerous industrial establishments e.g. B. spinning and weaving mills, button production. At that time, the districts of Obereulau, Stony and Merzdorf belonged to Eulau.

After the Second World War, the German population was expelled. Jílové were officially granted city rights in 1964 . In 1978 Sněžník was incorporated, and in 1980 Modrá and Kamenec also came to Jílové.
