Pirmin Adrian Meier (born February 21, 1947 in Würenlingen , Canton Aargau ) is a Swiss author , adult educator and former high school teacher .

Life

Pirmin Meier grew up as the son of a butcher family in Würenlingen. He studied German , philosophy and history at the University of Zurich and did his doctorate under Peter von Matt with a thesis on Reinhold Schneider as a historiographical writer. He then worked as an editor at the Catholic Aargauer Volksblatt , as a co-editor of Reinhold Schneider's works at the Suhrkamp / Insel publishing house and as a district teacher in the canton of Aargau.

From 1979 to 2012 he taught German, philosophy, religious studies and ethics at the Beromünster Cantonal School . He works as a historiographical writer , publicist, adult educator and television employee, especially in the area of historical regional studies and spirituality. As editor and former lecturer, he has been responsible for the works of the Swiss working-class writer Karl Kloter since 1991 .

Services

For the writer Hansjörg Schneider , who is a friend of Meier, he is “the most independent, headstrong Swiss historian of his generation”, for the publicist Eduard Stäuble “a historiographical writer of high standing”. His works move in the tradition of fictional historiography of the Anglo-Saxon countries and France, as it was cultivated in German by Golo Mann , a predecessor of Pirmin Meier as recipient of the Lake Constance Literature Prize . The subtitle “a narrative research” in the book about Heinrich Federer is programmatic. The main characters in his literary biographies are consistently creative thinkers who, in the course of their lives, are temporarily or permanently sidelined. Meier's most successful work Paracelsus, Doktor und Prophet was translated into various languages (including Russian) and was published in 2013 in the 6th edition 2013 with the dedication “ in memoriam Federal Councilor Otto Stich”. Meier's most extensive work, Ich Bruder Klaus von Flüe, was recognized by the mystic expert Alois M. Haas as the “best interpretation” of the Swiss national saint to date. In 2008 Hugo Loetscher was critical of Meier's not very globalization-friendly conservatism and a strongly Christian image of Europe, while at the same time praising an unconventional view of history, through which "Central Switzerland got on the literary map of Switzerland".

In 1984 Pirmin Meier published a volume of poetry in free verse form, peppered with literary allusions. Since 2004 he has been writing libretti for musical festivals and oratorios , such as the hagiography Vitus (about St. Vitus ) interspersed with folk religious motifs , set to music by Enrico Lavarini , and most recently the Holy Cross Vespers for Carl Rütti , which was published in May 2013 in the pilgrimage church Heiligkreuz (Entlebuch ) was premiered. In 2011, von Meier appeared in the Swiss book for young people Sankt Gotthard und der Schmied von Göschenen , a complete revision of the youth novel Der Schmied von Göschenen by Robert Schedler , in which the historical context based on scientific literature was taken more into account than in the original.
