Eduard Spörri (born January 21, 1901 in Wettingen ; † July 1, 1995 there ) was a Swiss sculptor .

Life

Spörri came from a family of sculptors. His grandfather, father and uncle ran a sculpture workshop in Wettingen.

From 1917 to 1919 he attended the arts and crafts school in Zurich and at the same time completed an apprenticeship with the sculptor Turo Rossi in Locarno, which he completed in 1920. From 1921 to 1923 he took courses with Joseph Wackerle at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Munich and continued his education for two more years at the Academy of Fine Arts with Hermann Hahn . Here he came into contact with the work of Adolf von Hildebrand and Wilhelm Lehmbruck , who shaped him as role models. In 1924 he took over his father's workshop in Wettingen, but gave it up again in favor of artistic sculpture.

A study award from the Swiss Confederation (1929) enabled him to go on a study trip to Rome and Naples. Another federal art grant was used to finance a stay in Paris in 1931 and 1932. This is where Spörri's admiration for Aristide Maillol and Auguste Rodin began , which now began to shape his style.

In 1929 he married Rosa Bachofner, who was his model for a number of female figures. Walter Huser was Spörri's brother-in-law.
