Weltwoche was founded in 1933 as a Swiss weekly newspaper and has been published as a weekly magazine since 2002 . Editor-in-chief and publisher is Roger Köppel .

General

Publications in the Weltwoche repeatedly triggered various controversies. Examples are the Mirage affair (1964), the " Panzer 68 " affair (1979) and a series of articles about the murder in Kehrsatz (1988/1989) or the exposure of the Holocaust swindler Binjamin Wilkomirski (1998). With numerous revelations, she was also a driving force in the Roschacher affair in 2007 . She published several articles on abuse in the social welfare office of the city of Zurich. As a result, two whistleblowers were dismissed from the social welfare office and later convicted of violating official secrecy, which brought the question of better protection against whistleblowing into focus.

The deputy editor-in-chief Philipp Gut was convicted of defamation in 2016 and again in 2017 for his defamatory articles .

Well-known columnists of the magazine include the former SVP - National Councilor Christoph Mörgeli , the former SP party president Peter Bodenmann , the satirist Andreas Thiel and the journalists Henryk M. Broder , Mark van Huisseling and Kurt W. Zimmermann .

In its political stance, Die Weltwoche is classified as critical of the state and economically liberal . In line with this, Die Weltwoche itself claims in its guidelines a skeptical attitude towards the state and its organs, "which it examines through continuous reporting from a liberal perspective". It is "politically independent", but represents "a free, entrepreneurial worldview". In contrast, the Swiss sociologist Linards Udris has recently confirmed a clear tendency towards right-wing conservative to right-wing populist positions.

Publisher and editor-in-chief Roger Köppel joined the national conservative SVP in 2015 and was elected to the National Council on its list in October 2015 .

Edition

In 2011, the WEMF-certified circulation was 77,800 copies sold and fell to 56,550 copies by 2014. In 2018, the certified circulation was 40,924 (previous year 45,124) sold or 45,519 (previous year 52,543) common specimens. The World Week is a week of 175,000 (prev. 193,000) people read and heard with 3.8 readers per issue the most highly regarded journals in Switzerland, but has a much lower range than most competitors leaves except for the weekly newspaper WOZ (WEMF MACH Basic 2018-II).

history

1933 to 1964

In 1933 Manuel Gasser and Karl von Schumacher founded Weltwoche based on the model of French weekly newspapers. It saw itself as anti-communist and was initially positive towards the front movement , National Socialism and fascism. In the course of 1934 and 1935 the editors partly changed their attitude and also wrote critically about National Socialism and fascism, but Gasser remained a member of the Frontists until 1937 . For Jean-Rodolphe von Salis , the leading articles and situation reports by Karl von Schumacher did a good job in drafting his world chronicle for Radio Beromünster, which was noted throughout Europe. A cousin of Karl von Schumacher, Felix von Schumacher-Nager , was a foreign correspondent in London for a short time . After the death of Karl von Schumacher in 1957, his brother Pierre von Schumacher took over the management until his death in 1964. Under editor-in-chief Lorenz Stucki (1954–1962), the Weltwoche took a pronounced pro-Western position during the Cold War.

1964 to 2001

In 1964 Rolf R. Bigler became editor-in-chief, his successor in 1968 was August E. Hohler , who was replaced in 1970 by Hans O. Staub . During this time, especially under Bigler, Weltwoche became a platform for non-conformist positions.

From 1980 to 1994 Rudolf Bächtold and Jürg Ramspeck were the chief editors. The Jean Frey publishing house to which the Weltwoche belonged repeatedly changed hands. In 1987 the publishing house was taken over by the speculator Werner K. Rey , who held Jean Frey AG and the Winterthur printing company until they were sold by Reys Omni Holding AG in April 1991 under the estate process. The next owner was the retailer Beat Curti , in whose Curti Medien Holding AG the Basler Zeitung joined in 1993. In 1996 the Basler Zeitung finally acquired the majority of the shares. Felix E. Müller was the interim editor. At that time, the circulation was over 100,000.

From 1997 to August 2001 Fredy Gsteiger was editor-in-chief of Weltwoche . Below him the newspaper was positioned in a left-liberal position. At the beginning of his term of office, Weltwoche had a circulation of over 97,000.

2001 to 2010

In 2001 Roger Köppel became editor-in-chief of Weltwoche and redesigned it in magazine format. Shortly thereafter, a group of financial investors around the Ticino financier Tito Tettamanti took over the majority of shares in Jean Frey AG, the publisher of Weltwoche . Köppel almost completely changed the editorial team and led Weltwoche on a decidedly economically liberal and right-wing conservative course. The circulation rose from around 84,000 to 91,000 copies by autumn 2003, and after a loss of around ten years, the publisher was able to return to operating profit for the first time, mainly thanks to major gains in the advertising market. The layout won numerous awards.

When the newspaper began to openly support the right-wing politician Christoph Blocher and his Swiss People's Party in the fall of 2003 , and Köppel wrote an appeal for Blocher to vote, Weltwoche became the subject of criticism. According to press reports, between autumn 2003 and summer 2004 the circulation fell by around 12,000 copies. In the spring of 2004, Köppel moved to the German daily newspaper Die Welt as editor-in-chief . The direction of Weltwoche did not change after his departure. Simon Heusser became the new editor-in-chief, but already resigned in June 2005 due to "unbridgeable differences in management issues". In September 2005 he was succeeded by Jürg Wildberger . The certified circulation was 80,436 copies sold in 2005, but rose again to 82,849 copies in 2006.

On November 1, 2006 Weltwoche Verlags AG was spun off from Jean Frey AG. Köppel initially bought 60 percent of the new Weltwoche Verlags AG, only to officially take it over a little later. He also took over the management of Weltwoche as publisher and editor-in-chief. Shortly afterwards, more than a dozen editors left the publishing house. The circulation increased to 85,772 copies in 2007.

After the end of the news magazine Facts in the summer of 2007, the magazine (a supplement to the Saturday edition of the Tages-Anzeiger ), the Swiss edition of Zeit , the Sonntagsblatt SonntagsZeitung ( Tages-Anzeiger ), and NZZ am Sonntag remain competitors on the German - Swiss market for political weekly newspapers , Switzerland on Sunday and Sunday view as well as the weekly newspaper (WOZ) .

Since 2011

Mainly because of the role Die Weltwoche had played in January 2012 in the affair surrounding the alleged insider trading of the then President of the Swiss National Bank , Philipp Hildebrand , the presidents of various Swiss parties asked the weekly newspaper to disclose their ownership structure - so far without consequences. There is a suspicion that Christoph Blocher and people close to him exercise considerable influence in the magazine and that editor-in-chief Roger Köppel is not the sole owner of the paper. In 2011, Köppel described himself as the “sole owner of Weltwoche”: “I brought in all of my assets, I took out bank loans and I got heavily into debt.” Blocher also denied the suspicion: “Roger Köppel is the sole owner of Weltwoche. That this is in doubt is damage to reputation. "

In April 2012, the newspaper printed a photo on the front page of a Roma child with a pistol aimed at the viewer and the headline “The Roma are coming: Raids in Switzerland”, as well as a corresponding report inside entitled “They come, steal and go”. Austrian journalist Klaus Kamolz showed those responsible under Title photo and caption for incitement to further criminal charges from Germany as the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma followed, from Austria and Switzerland. The deputy editor-in-chief Philipp Gut rejected the criticism. The photo used for the cover story was taken by Italian photographer Livio Mancini, who in 2008 photographed children playing in a landfill on the outskirts of Gjakova in Kosovo . The picture agency, from which the picture comes, spoke of an improper use of the picture by Weltwoche . The image was used in a distorting way and changing the truth. The statement in the picture was reversed and misused as an illustration for an article. The public prosecutor's offices in Zurich and Vienna discontinued the proceedings against Weltwoche at the expense of the state treasury , as the public prosecutor's offices believed that neither the cover picture nor the article constituted racial discrimination . The Swiss press council reprimanded Weltwoche because of the cover picture, as the newspaper was suggesting to the readership that the child depicted was part of Roma crime. The headline also contributes, according to the press council, "in a discriminatory manner to fueling fears and reinforcing stereotypical prejudices against an ethnic group".

In 2015, Sepp Blatter was named Swiss of the year by Weltwoche . Köppel's interview with Blatter was called provocative buffoons or real satire and was also mocked.

In 2015, the editor-in-chief and sole owner of Weltwoche, Roger Köppel, joined the right-wing conservative Swiss People's Party (SVP), to which he has been said to have been very close since he took over Weltwoche in 2007. He was elected to the National Council on October 18 and now represents the interests of the SVP in the Swiss Parliament.

At the beginning of 2016 the novel Bad News by Bruno Ziauddin was published, in which he tells a fictional story of a weekly newspaper in 2003, which has similarities to the Weltwoche.

In May 2019, strangers attacked the editorial building of Weltwoche. They sprayed red paint, a hammer-and-sickle symbol and the words "Against right-wing hate" on the front door. On May 1, Weltwoche editor Alex Baur was attacked by several people at the festival on the Zurich barracks area.

In December 2019, the Neue Zürcher Zeitung accused Weltwoche of tendentious reporting on the People's Republic of China , combined with an accumulation of paid advertisements from Chinese sources.
