Karl von Schumacher (born September 10, 1894 in Lucerne ; † February 26, 1957 in Zurich ) was a Swiss diplomat , writer and journalist . Based on the model of the French weekly newspaper L'Express, he founded the political magazine Die Weltwoche , of which he was the publisher and editor-in-chief . From 1938 he also published the women's monthly magazine Annabelle . Karl von Schumacher came from the old Lucerne patrician family Schumacher and was a son of the Council of States and Colonel Edmund von Schumacher and grandson of General Felix von Schumacher .

Years of education

Karl von Schumacher attended the Engelberg and Sarnen monastery high schools and studied political science at the University of Bern . Hermann Graf Keyserling and Carl Gustav Jung were among his pioneering spirits . After the licentiate he joined in 1919 at the Political Department (now the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs ) in the Swiss diplomatic service, where he served as Attaché found in the field service use. He worked as a historian and writer, became a journalist and traveled the world as a correspondent for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung until 1932 . One of his friends was Wolfgang Pauli , who later won the Nobel Prize for Physics. Travel experience, human encounters, historical studies and art experiences in all cultural circles were the intellectual property with which he ventured in 1933 to found a newspaper of international importance.

The world week

The founding of Weltwoche with Manuel Gasser and the role it played in the time of National Socialism and World War II cannot be deleted from the history of Switzerland. In the 1930s and during the war, the newspaper was part of the intellectual defense of the country and a mouthpiece for emigrated German journalists . The Weltwoche was a highly respected voice of freedom and liberal values. For Jean Rudolf von Salis , the leading articles and situation reports by Karl von Schumacher did a good job in drafting his world chronicle for Radio Beromünster, which was observed every week across Europe . Even Golo Mann held the Weltwoche as a freelancer for a lifetime loyalty. In addition, Karl von Schumacher also wrote books on cultural history and historical content.
