Georg Kreis (born November 14, 1943 in Basel ) is a Swiss historian . He is professor emeritus for Modern History and History of Switzerland at the University of Basel , was head of the Basel Institute for Europe until July 2011 and President of the Federal Commission against Racism (FCR) until the end of 2011 .

biography

Kreis studied history, German and geography in Basel, Paris and Cambridge . He wrote his dissertation in 1972 on the Swiss press censorship during the Second World War . In 1991 and 1992 he was the Federal Council commissioner to draft a historical report on state security in Switzerland between 1935 and 1990. As a former member of the Independent Expert Commission Switzerland - Second World War ICE , also known as the Bergier Commission after its chairman , and various others Historians' commissions Kreis is considered to be a profound expert on recent Swiss history. He headed the European Institute at the University of Basel from its foundation in 1993 to July 2011. He was its president from the foundation of the Federal Commission against Racism (FCR) in 1995 until he stepped down from this office at the end of 2011.

Georg Kreis has written numerous publications on Swiss history, Switzerland's relationship with other countries and minorities, and has made various television and radio appearances as an expert on specific issues. He is regarded as a committed voice in public discussions, especially on the behavior of Switzerland during the Second World War, and has often suffered harsh criticism from the Swiss People's Party (SVP).

In 2006, Georg Kreis was included in the list of the 100 most important Swiss personalities by Schweizer Illustrierte . In 2007 he was awarded the Fischhof Prize , which is awarded by the Foundation against Racism and Anti-Semitism (GRA) and the Society for Minorities in Switzerland (GMS).

He is a Swiss-German citizen . From 1973 to 2013 he was a member of the FDP , temporarily national vice-president and member of the wider citizens' council.

Kreis is married and has three sons.
