René Zeller

René Zeller (born July 26, 1962 in Brussels ; † May 17, 2018 ) was a Swiss journalist and historian .

life and career

Zeller studied history, constitutional law and journalism at the University of Zurich , where he worked with Walter Schaufelberger in 1989 with his dissertation on Peace and Order in Switzerland. The organization of the military security service from 1848 to 1939 as Dr. phil. received his doctorate.

In 1988 he joined the editorial team of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ). He worked for the Zurich department, from 1994 for the domestic department and in 1999 became head of the Bundeshaus editorial office. After the NZZ was launched on Sunday , Zeller moved to the new editorial team as head of the domestic market. He then worked as head of the Bundeshaus editorial team for Swiss television , and after an intermediate stage in public relations at Farner Consulting AG, he turned back to journalism. In 2008 he became head of news, 2009 head of the domestic department and at the beginning of 2010 he was also deputy editor-in-chief of the NZZ. From January until Eric Gujer took over as editor-in-chief in March 2015, after the resignation of editor-in-chief Markus Spillmann , he led the editor-in-chief of the NZZ on an interim basis with Luzi Bernet and Colette Gradwohl . From October 2016 he was head of federal politics and member of the editor-in-chief of the weekly magazine Weltwoche .

Zeller was the author of the first biography about the Swiss military, colonel and frontist Emil Sonderegger .

He died in May 2018 at the age of 55 from complications from cancer . He was married, had three children, including Roman Zeller, who is also a journalist, and lived in Hedingen . His father Willy Zeller (1929–2018) was a correspondent for the NZZ in Brussels and head of the business department.
