Gerhard Schwarz (journalist)

Gerhard Schwarz (born April 19, 1951 in Hard , Austria ; resident in St. Gallen ) is a Swiss - Austrian publicist and author. From 2010 to 2016 he was director of the liberal think tank Avenir Suisse . Before that, he was the business editor of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung from 1981 to 2010 , and also its deputy editor-in-chief from 2008 to 2010 .

Life

After graduating from the humanistic grammar school in Bregenz , Schwarz began studying economics and business administration at the University of St. Gallen in 1969 , which he completed in 1973. He then worked for several years as an assistant to Walter Adolf Jöhr and completed study visits to Great Barrington , USA, and Bogotá , Colombia. In 1980 he received his doctorate with a work on development economics on Colombia under the title "Micro-industrialization: Crafts and Adapted Technology ". After a short stint at Hilti AG in Schaan , Schwarz joined the business department of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung in 1981 . From 1982 to 1986 he was their business correspondent in Paris . From the beginning of 1987 he was business editor in Zurich, in 1994 he took over the management of the business editor. From the 1989/90 winter semester to the 2013/14 winter semester, he held a teaching position at the University of Zurich . In 1995, Schwarz completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in Cambridge , USA. In 2008, Schwarz also became deputy editor-in-chief of the NZZ. His main focus was on economic policy , regulatory policy and monetary policy . From November 1, 2010 to March 31, 2016, Schwarz headed the Avenir Suisse think tank in Zurich and Geneva, succeeding Thomas Held .

Schwarz is a member of the Mont Pelerin Society (its Vice President from 2014 to 2016), several board members - including the St. Gallen Foundation for International Studies - and was chairman of the Friedrich A. von Hayek Society from 2002 to 2011 . He is also President of the Progress Foundation. Until 2010 he was a board member of the Association for the Publication of the Swiss Monthly Bullets , for which he wrote and continues to write numerous articles.

Jürgen Nordmann counts Schwarz among the outstanding neoliberal journalists (“second hand dealers in ideas” sensu Hayek) in the German-speaking newspaper sector.

Gerhard Schwarz was honored in 1996 (together with Juergen B. Donges ) with the Ludwig Erhard Prize for Business Journalism and in 2009 with the annual prize of the Foundation for Western Ethics and Culture .

Gerhard Schwarz is married, has three grown children and lives in Zurich . He was naturalized in Switzerland in 1982 and is now a Swiss-Austrian citizen.
