Markus Spillmann

Markus Spillmann (born October 5, 1967 in Basel ) is a Swiss journalist , media manager and entrepreneur. From 2006 to the end of 2014 he was editor-in-chief of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) and head of journalism at NZZ AG.

Life

Spillmann studied history , political science and economics at the Universities of Basel and Zurich . He completed his studies with a thesis on Complex Interdependencies in International Relations with Dieter Ruloff . During his studies, he worked as a student trainee at a major Swiss bank in the field of political and economic country risk analysis . In 2008 he completed executive management training at the Graduate School for Business at Stanford University , and in 2015 he completed further training in corporate governance for board members at the Swiss Board School .

After working as an assistant at the University of Zurich, Spillmann became a domestic editor for the Badener Tagblatt in 1995 . In the same year he switched to NZZ as a foreign editor. From spring 2002 he headed the international department of the newly launched NZZ am Sonntag and was deputy editor-in-chief. In April 2006 he was appointed editor-in-chief of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung and head of journalism NZZ to succeed Hugo Bütler by the board of directors of the AG for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung . In December 2014, his resignation for the end of the year was announced after he was unable to come to an agreement with the Board of Directors on key issues relating to the journalistic strategy. As a journalist Spillmann u. a. as a correspondent a. i. active in Great Britain and undertook research trips to war and crisis areas, u. a. Iraq, Gaza Strip, West Bank, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Kosovo, Bosnia. From 2007 to 2014, he and Marco Färber hosted the talk show "NZZ Viewpoints - Two Journalists, One Guest" on Swiss television. After his resignation Spillmann worked as a columnist in the Sunday newspaper.

In mid-2015, he founded his owner-managed consulting company Spillmann Publizistik ,strategy Management GmbH , based in Zurich, which focuses on accompanying managers, committees, organizations and companies in exposed situations, as well as working in the areas of strategy development and change management . Since October 2015, Spillmann and his company have been partners in the KMES Partner consultancy in Zurich.

As a lecturer, he teaches media economics , editorial management and journalism at universities in Germany and abroad . And he regularly moderates roundtables and conferences.

In 2016 he was appointed a member of the Federal Media Commission EMEK by the Swiss Federal Council . Since 2017, Spillmann has also been President of the Board of Trustees of the Swiss Press Council and the Advisory Board for the StrategyDialog21 think tank . At the annual conference of the International Press Institute (IPI) in Abjua, Nigeria, Spillmann was elected the new President of the world's oldest non-governmental organization for media freedom in 2018, of which he has been a member since 2007.

He lives in Zurich .
