Dieter Ruloff

Dieter Ruloff (born September 13, 1947 in Remscheid ) is a German political scientist. He is professor emeritus for international relations at the University of Zurich .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1967 at the Goethe-Gymnasium in Frankfurt a. M. Ruloff studied history , political science and economics at the universities of Frankfurt , Konstanz and Zurich . In 1971 he graduated from the University of Konstanz the Master of Arts (MA) in History and Political Science, 1974, he was at the University of Zurich with Daniel Frei with a thesis on modeling international conflicts doctorate . In 1980 he completed his habilitation at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Zurich with a thesis on interdisciplinary methodological questions in the field of history and political science. In the winter semester of 1987 he was appointed adjunct professor at the University of Zurich. From 1990 to 1993 he was a member of the board of directors of the major Swiss bank UBS in Zurich, where he was in charge of the staff department for country risks. In 1993 he returned to the University of Zurich as full professor for international relations. At the same time he took over the management of the Swiss Institute for International Research (until the end of 2007) as a delegate of the board (managing director). He is a founding member of the Center for Comparative and International Studies at the ETH and the University of Zurich and was director of the Institute for Political Science at the University of Zurich until 2012.

Research and Teaching

In his work, Ruloff deals with scientific-logical and methodological problems in political science and classic topics of international relations. Up to the end of the Cold War , questions of East-West relations, arms control and the causes of war were the focus of his research, afterwards, among other things, world trade, international environmental policy and Swiss foreign policy. Ruloff is an exponent of a liberal-realistic view of international relations. Methodically, Ruloff worked both historically and comparatively as well as statistically and formally modeling. The best-selling of his books is "How wars begin", which was published in 2004 in the third, revised edition.
