Manuel Gasser

Manuel Gasser (born July 28, 1909 in Zurich ; † September 16, 1979 there ) was a Swiss journalist , columnist and co-founder of Weltwoche .

Life

Already at the age of 15 Gasser wrote his first smaller feature articles in the Luzerner Neusten Nachrichten , in the Luzerner Tagblatt or in the Berner Bund . After his teacher training at the Muristalden seminar in Bern, which he broke off in 1929, Eduard Korrodi hired him in 1930 as a France correspondent for the feature section of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung . In Paris, Gasser came into contact with important artists of his time such as James Joyce and Jean Cocteau .

In November 1933 the first issue of the Weltwoche , which he founded together with Karl von Schumacher (1894–1957) in September , was published . From 1933 to 1946 and from 1951 to 1957 Gasser was the feature editor of this magazine, interrupted by correspondent activities in Berlin (April 1946 to 1949) and London (1949 to 1951). From 1933 to 1937 he was a member of the frontists .

After the death of Karl von Schumacher, Gasser left Weltwoche in 1957 . The following year he became editor-in-chief of the cultural magazine du and stayed there until 1974. Together with Rosellina Burri-Bischof , Hans Finsler and others he was one of the founding members of the «Foundation for Photography», which was established on May 4, 1971 and was from 1971 until 1979 its first president.

From 1969 onwards, Gasser spent the last years of his life in the tenant house of Schloss Brunegg , which belonged to his friend Jean Rudolf von Salis . In addition to Salis, Gasser's circle of friends also included Erika and Golo Mann , the actress Maria Becker , the painter Varlin and Friedrich Dürrenmatt .
