Eduard Korrodi (born November 20, 1885 in Zurich ; † September 4, 1955 there ) was a Swiss journalist , essayist and literary critic .

Life

Eduard Korrodi, son of a teacher, attended schools in Zurich and at the college Maria Hilf in Schwyz . He completed his German studies at the University of Zurich in 1912 ; he did his doctorate with Adolf Frey on Conrad Ferdinand Meyer .

He worked as a grammar school teacher, from 1914 to 1950 as head of the features section of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ), where he earned the reputation of a Swiss “pope of literature ”. As such, he initially called for a farewell to the “ Seldwyler spirit”, but increasingly criticized all authors who broke new formal and literary paths or who he identified politically to the left of his line. His attacks were directed against Jakob Bührer , Walter Muschg or Albin Zollinger . Max Frisch , who was "discovered" by him, later called him the " Federal Literary Court ". In 1920 he annoyed Hermann Hesse with the " exposure " of the Demian pseudonym Emil Sinclair . In 1936 he provoked a reply from Thomas Mann with an article on German exile literature . In an open letter to Eduard Korrodi , which appeared in the NZZ on February 3, Mann defended the writers in exile criticized by Korrodi and for the first time since 1933 took a public position against National Socialist Germany.

His work as a critic was dealt with in a dissertation in 1989 .
