The Kantonsschule Kollegium Schwyz (KKS) is a public middle school in Schwyz . The school has around 400 pupils who are taught by around 60 teachers. The school is particularly popular with high school students from the inner part of the canton and from neighboring areas outside the canton .
history
Until the beginning of the 17th century Schwyz itself did not run a "higher school". Schwyzers willing to learn who want to prepare for a political, military or economic career, for example, visited the monastery school in Einsiedeln .
The 30-year-old Schwyz priest Leonhard Zehnder opened the first Latin school in Schwyz in 1627 in the former Capuchin monastery of St. Josef im Loo .
170 years later - French revolutionary troops also moved into Schwyz in 1797 - the successful monastery school, attended by an average of 45 Latins every year, was closed.
A new grammar school was opened in the old armory on Hofmatt in 1804 under the leadership of Einsiedeln Abbey . When the number of students dropped to 25 and a concordat agreement with Einsiedeln was rejected by the people, the Jesuits were commissioned to build a new Christian teaching institution in Schwyz, but to continue to run the Hofmatt grammar school for the time being.
On July 25, 1841 , the foundation stone for the new Jesuit college was laid on the Hintern Feldlimatte , today's location. The grammar school opened in 1844.
From 1856 (introduced by Theodosius Florentini ) to 1972 the school was subordinate to the diocese of Chur as the Catholic college Maria Hilf . After that, the institution popularly known as "Kollegi" passed into the possession of the canton , which continued a traditional boarding school until 2001 . About half of the college building, which has a church with a dome in the center, now houses the cantonal administration.
Current leadership
The KKS is run by a rector, Elisabeth Oetiker-Grossmann, Brunnen, Michael Schlüssel, Brunnen and Urs Knaack, Schwyz. Jordi is only the third rector who is not a theologian. The first was Franz Allemann and the second, René Oechslin , was in office from 1992 to 2003 and died in July 2007 of complications from cancer.

modification
The rooms and infrastructure of the canton school Kollegium Schwyz have to undergo extensive renovation. Inexpedient room sizes and inadequate room organization from the time the school was in operation with the boarding school are remedied by a new room concept. The cafeteria is also being expanded. The renovation began in the first week of summer vacation at the beginning of July 2008. The realization should be finished in December 2010. The renovation will take place in two stages:
- Summer 2008 to summer 2009 - renovation of the north wing
- Summer 2009 to winter 2010 - renovation of the west and south wings.
The east foyer, which is still part of the cantonal school and is the entrance area of the cantonal administration, and the auditorium were not affected by the renovation.
The renovation has been completed since the beginning of the 2011/2012 school year. The lessons are given in the large, bright rooms equipped with the latest technology.
Trivia
- Every year there is a volleyball night and the college festival, which can be designed by the students themselves.
- There are special projects in the school year itself:
- A project week takes place before the autumn break. The first grades complete a sports and health week, while the second graders can choose between a technology and a business week. The third-grade students have an exchange with classes from Morges , Hamburg and Vaasa , while the fourth-grade students have time for their Matura work.
- At the beginning of November there is a block week in which certain school subjects are taught on a specific topic, such as writing a scientific paper for the second graders.
- The college building has already been hit twice by the fire devil:
- On April 3, 1910, almost the entire school premises fell victim to the fire - only one year later the building was rebuilt, significantly influenced by the then representative of the client, Josef Scheuber .
- During the last phase of the conversion to the canton school (in 1972 the canton took over the sponsorship) in 1979, a fire broke out again in the north and west wings during the parents' day. The damage amounted to around 5 million Swiss francs . The renovation was not greatly affected by it.
- Extracurricular activities are also maintained at the KKS. In addition to instrumental lessons, there is also a string orchestra, student music and a vocal ensemble. The traditional theater activities, which were reintroduced in the 21st century, were spun off into an independent association as of the 2008/2009 season.
- Women were first admitted to school in 1977. The Theresianum Ingenbohl , located in the southern neighboring municipality of Ingenbohl , still allows only women to attend its courses (with the exception of the technical secondary school ).
- The KKS has two bus stops, both of which are served by local AAGS bus lines: The “Lärchenweg / Kollegi” stop on line 30 is on Riedstrasse by the gym, the “Kollegi” stop on line 31, which ends here, is practically in front of the School front door.
- The KKS hit the headlines in 2008 when ETH Zurich published a ranking of secondary schools, with the canton of Schwyz doing poorly.
