Azerbaijan presidential election in 2008
The 2008 presidential election in Azerbaijan took place on October 15th. The elections were boycotted by the main opposition parties, so a victory for İlham Heydər oğlu Əliyev , the candidate of the New Azerbaijan party, was considered certain in advance.
4.8 million people were eligible to vote.
Election campaign and boycott
Seven candidates ran for election. The main opposition parties, including the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan , the Liberal Party of Azerbaijan and Azerbaijan Democratic Party , did not provide candidates and called for a boycott of the election. This was justified by the fact that the opposition was being hindered in the election campaign and that the election was such a farce that only served to legitimize the president. The Azerbaijani Communist Party, on the other hand, supported incumbent President Ilham Aliyev.
According to the organization Reporters Without Borders , the president would have got more than 44 percent of the measured time on television, his competitors a maximum of 1.5 percent. In addition, social and political problems were not dealt with in the media.
Election process and criticism
The election took place on Wednesday October 15, 2008 , which was declared unemployed. The election was observed by 1,200 election observers from Europe, the CIS and the USA, including 430 from the OSCE, the Council of Europe and the European Parliament.
The opposition party Müsawat criticized the fact that voters were pushed to vote. Some company employees are said to have been forced to vote in their company so that the employer can control the voting.
According to observers from the CIS, the election was transparent and calm . Boris Frlec, Head of the OSCE Election Observer, confirmed the transparency on election day, but criticized the lack of political competition in advance. The choice itself was technically ... not a big problem this time .
Election result
According to preliminary data from the electoral commission, İlham Heydər oğlu Əliyev received 89.0% of the vote. The turnout is 77%. Ultimately, this did not change the structure of Azerbaijani politics .
