Adolf Frey
Adolf Frey (born February 18, 1855 in Küttigen ; † February 12, 1920 in Zurich ) was a Swiss writer and literary historian .
Life
The son of the popular writer Jakob Frey (1825–1875) studied German and obtained his doctorate in 1878 at the University of Bern on Albrecht von Haller . After stays in Berlin and Leipzig, he came to the Alte Kantonsschule Aarau as a German teacher in 1882 . Here proposals included Albert Einstein to his students. In 1883 he married the German historian Lina Beger (1853–1942). In 1898 he became professor of German literature at the University of Zurich as successor to Jakob Baechtold . He was on friendly terms with the only Swiss Nobel Prize winner for literature, Carl Spitteler . Adolf Frey died of cancer six days before his 65th birthday.
He devoted his scientific writings mainly to Swiss literature , especially to his role models Gottfried Keller and Conrad Ferdinand Meyer . In addition, he published works by Swiss poets such as Salomon Gessner and Johann Gaudenz von Salis-Seewis and wrote poems, patriotic festivals and novels in the style of bourgeois realism .

The abdication ceremony took place on February 14, 1920 in St. Peter's Church . Adolf Keller gave the address and Frey's student and friend Emil Ermatinger spoke on behalf of the University of Zurich .
