Ernst Würtenberger

Ernst Gustav Würtenberger (born October 23, 1868 in Steißlingen ; † February 5, 1934 in Karlsruhe ) was a German portrait and genre painter , graphic artist and art theorist and professor at the State Art School in Karlsruhe .
life and work
Ernst Würtenberger studied from 1888 to 1892 at the Munich Art Academy with Johann Caspar Herterich and Wilhelm von Diez . In 1892 he got to know works by Arnold Böcklin on a trip to Zurich , whereupon he went to Florence to study with Böcklin in the winter of 1894/95 . From 1896 to 1897 he was a master student of Ferdinand Keller at the Karlsruhe Art Academy . From 1898 he ran his own studio in Munich. In 1899 he met the Black Forest painter Hans Thoma , whose style can also be demonstrated in Würtenberger's work.
After his marriage, he first moved to Konstanz , and in 1902 to Zurich , where he made around 200 portraits of Zurich personalities as a portrait painter by 1921. The works of Ferdinand Hodler , which he got to know there, then had a strong influence on him. From 1902 he taught at the Zurich Luise Stadler School (women's art school). From 1905 Würtenberger also created woodcuts . From 1914 to 1921 he taught at the Zurich School of Applied Arts . From 1902 to 1921 Würtenberger was also a board member of the Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft (exhibition and collection committee) and advised the art collectors Gustav Henneberg and Richard Kisling , where he sponsored works from the artistic environment of Hodler, Félix Vallotton and Thoma.
1921 left Würtenberger and his family Zurich as it was in the wake of Gustav Wolf Professor of woodcut , illustration and composition at the Baden State Art School (now Academy of Fine Arts, Karlsruhe was appointed), where he remained until his death in 1934 worked. As head of the lithography class at the academy, he advocated the appointment of Georg Scholz (1923 Würtenberger's assistant in the lithography class; 1924 head of a preparatory class) and Karl Hubbuch (1924 to 1925 assistant Würtenberger, probably on the recommendation of Scholz; 1925 head of a drawing class ).
Ernst Würtenberger is the father of the criminal law professor Thomas Würtenberger and the art historian Franzsepp Würtenberger as well as the grandfather of the constitutional lawyer Thomas Würtenberger and the former Freiburg district president Julian Würtenberger .
