Fritz Klemm (born August 14, 1902 in Mannheim ; † May 17, 1990 in Karlsruhe ) was a German painter . He taught as a professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe .

Life

Fritz Klemm studied after a teacher training between 1922 and 1925 at the Badische Landeskunstschule in Karlsruhe a. a. with Ernst Gustav Würtenberger and August Groh . In 1948 he returned to his place of training as a teacher and led a work class at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. Five years later he was appointed professor and retired in 1970.

In the last two decades of his life, Klemm devoted himself exclusively to painting and collage. Fritz Klemm died on May 17, 1990, one year after his wife Antonia, Countess of Westphalen . She got to know Klemm at the Baden State Art School. The marriage resulted in four daughters and two sons. His second daughter, Barbara Klemm , brought her parents' artistic legacy to photography.

A student of his was u. a. the sculptor Franz Bernhard .

Artistically, Fritz Klemm went his very own way. After completing realistic work during his apprenticeship, he switched to gouache on paper at the end of the sixties . He became known for his sophisticated Caparol technology . Due to the thick application of paint and the grainy consistency of the Caparolfarbe, these pictures have the character of a wall or plaster. This gives them a rough plasticity. Klemm experimented with materials throughout his life, most of which came together in collages. Thematically, forest, wall and window representations run through his entire work. The human being moves back as a perceiving recipient and appears again schematically in self-portraits.
