Potočari is a village in the east of Bosnia and Herzegovina . It is located about six kilometers northwest of the city of Srebrenica , to whose municipality it belongs. The village consists of two sub-towns, Donji Potočari , located in the valley of the Drina tributary, Križevica , and Gornji Potočari, further west and higher . The 1991 census counted 4,338 inhabitants, 93 percent of whom were Bosniaks and 7 percent belonged to other ethnic groups, mainly Serbs . Potočari has belonged to the Republika Srpska since the Bosnian War .

Wartime

During the Bosnian War , the village was in the Srebrenica enclave. The Dutch UN battalion “ Dutchbat ” was located here on the site of a disused car battery factory . As in all other places in the enclave, the population increased because the village took in refugees from neighboring parts of Bosnia. In July 1995 the Serbian troops committed the Srebrenica massacre here and at other crime scenes in the area .

post war period

The main monument and cemetery for the Srebrenica genocide are in Potočari. The US government made the largest donation to build the monument. It was inaugurated in 2003 by former US President Bill Clinton .
