Općina

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Općina ( plural : općine ) is the Croatian and Bosnian name for union and large municipalities in the former Yugoslavia . The term is currently still used for large municipalities in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina .

Many of these association communities reach the size of German rural districts , so they far exceed German association communities in area.

history

In the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia , after the number had been reduced by the amalgamation of small municipalities by 1965 , there were a total of 471 large municipalities (as of 1989), known as Opština ( Serbia , Macedonia and Montenegro ) and Općina ( Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia ) or Občina ( Slovenia ).

After the break-up of Yugoslavia , some of the newly formed states retained the structure in union communities, while they were dissolved in Macedonia and the large communities were assigned to regions . Today they represent the fourth administrative level below the cantons in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina , the third below the entity in the Republika Srpska and the third below the counties in Croatia .
