The former courthouse was built according to a design by Eduard Louis de Coninck from The Hague between 1838 and 1841 in neoclassical style. In the 1980s, the courthouse was converted by architect Arne Mastenbroek into accommodation for the information processing department, which at that time belonged to the "Rijksplanologische Dienst" (State Office for Spatial Planning). After the second expansion in 1994, the former courthouse became a full-fledged museum. From 1994 to 2001 it housed the Museum of Naive Art and Art Brut. In 2004 and 2005 the former courthouse was converted by the architect Gunnar Daan into today's Museum de Fundatie. In 2012 and 2013, the roof of the existing building was expanded and another exhibition hall was created. This oval-spherical loft extension is a design by Bierman Henket Architects.

Kasteel het Nijenhuis in Heino

The 14th century manor and castle Nijenhuis is located near the village of Heino . However, it is located on the territory of the municipality of Olst-Wijhe and is owned by the Dutch province of Overijssel. It was inhabited by Dirk Hannema from 1958 until his death in 1984. This art collector was, among other things, director of the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum. He left the works he had collected to the Hannema-de Stuers Fundatie and thus to the Museum de Fundatie. After the restoration in 2004, the Nijenhuis was opened to the public. The sculpture garden on the estate is one of the largest in the Netherlands. Around 90 sculptures from the 20th and 21st centuries by artists from Germany and abroad can be admired in the garden.
