Charley Toorop

Charley Toorop (born March 24, 1891 in Katwijk ; † November 6, 1955 in Bergen in North Holland), daughter of the painter Jan Toorop , was an important painter and lithographer from the Netherlands .

The self-taught artist stayed in Paris between 1919 and 1921 and moved to Bergen (North Holland) in 1922. There she worked in the style of the Bergen School . After 1928, their coloring became lighter with more red colors.

From 1937 onwards, her works show greater strength and expression. The figures are often shown distorted. Her most important work from this era, The Three Generations, is shown in the Boijmans Van Beuningen museum in Rotterdam .

Many of her lithographs have been used as book illustrations and for calendars. One of them, a self-portrait, even reached a circulation of around a million copies. In her later works she mainly worked for the Catholic Church .

Charley Toorop was temporarily married to the philosopher Hendrik Fernhout. The painter Edgar Fernhout (1912–1974), the filmmaker John Fernhout and a daughter emerged from the marriage.
