history
The building in Museum Park Rotterdam was constructed from 1928 to 1935 according to plans by the architect Ad van der Steur. It was expanded from 1963 to 1972 and from 2000 to 2003. The museum's collection, which was previously stored in the museum's basement, will be made accessible to the public in 2018 in an art depot designed by the architect Winy Maas , which will be built in the museum park in 2017. The museum is listed as a Rijksmonument .
collection
The museum's holdings come partly from the bequest of the Rotterdam lawyer Frans Jacob Otto Boijmans from 1847. In 1958 the museum acquired the collection of the industrialist and shipowner Daniel George van Beuningen. In later years the collection was expanded through purchases and other donations.
In the museum you can see a small version of the “ Tower of Babel ” by Pieter Brueghel the Elder , works by Rembrandt , Jan Steen , Vincent van Gogh and works by many masters of the 20th century. The important graphic collection owns the world's only generally recognized drawing by Giorgione (1478–1510).
