Karel Maria Theodorus Ex , called Sjarel Ex (born March 1957 in Kerkrade ), is a Dutch museum director and art historian .

Life

Ex studied art history in Utrecht , where he specialized in the early Dutch avant-garde and the artist group De Stijl .

From 1988 to 2004 he was director of the Centraal Museum Utrecht . In 2004 he was awarded the silver medal by the city of Utrecht for his services in the development of the Centraal Museum. Under the direction of Sjarel Ex, the proportion of self-generated funds increased thanks to increased visitor numbers and contributions from sponsors.

Since 2004 he has been director of the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam. Sjarel Ex plans to make the museum's collection previously stored in the museum's basement accessible to the public. For this purpose, an art depot designed by the architect Winy Maas will be built in 2017 in the museum park as a 40 meter high circular building. Selected private collectors should also be able to rent their own rooms in the 17,000 square meter art depot in order to exhibit their works of art to the public. Restoration studios, smaller galleries and restaurants are planned for the rotunda.
