Works
Scorel is the Dutch painter who pioneered the imitation of the Italians. His main works are:
- Holy clan of the Frangipani altar in the parish church of Obervellach in Carinthia (1520), the earliest preserved signed work - still under the influence of Dürer
- Tempera pictures from the Old Testament (Church of Warmenhuizen near Alkmaar)
- Crucifixion (1530, Bonn, Rheinisches Landesmuseum)
- repentant Magdalena and Bathsheba in the bath (Amsterdam) and
- David killing Goliath (Dresden, gallery)
His portraits, including that of his lover Agathe van Schonhoven in the Palazzo Doria in Rome, are freer from the Italian influence. (See Toman, Studien über J. v. S. (Leipzig 1889)).
