Schoorl is a Dutch village in the province of North Holland . The place belongs to the municipality of Bergen and has 6,160 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017).
location
Schoorl is about 8 km northwest of Alkmaar . Until 2001 Schoorl was an independent municipality. The village extends to about 8 km in length and a maximum width of 2 km. Schoorl is located on the edge of the highest and widest dunes in the Netherlands , which reach heights of up to 54 meters.
history
Schoorl was mentioned in the 10th century as Scoronlo , in 1094 as Scorla and in 1639 as Scorle or Schoorel . The name indicates a forest with the ending a and lo and a sandbar near a swampy area with scor . The latter is derived from the Germanic word skaurna , which can still be found in English as Shore .
An army camp was set up in the dunes of Schoorl from 1939. During the Second World War , the camp was used by the German occupiers as an internment and concentration camp until 1941 . From here Jews and other prisoners were transported to other camps.
