Johannes Christiaan Schotel
Johannes Christiaan Schotel (born November 11, 1787 in Dordrecht , † December 22, 1838 there ) was a Dutch marine painter , etcher and lithographer .
Life
Together with his teacher Martinus Schouman , he executed two large pictures, the retreat of the French from Dordrecht in 1814 and the bombardment of Algiers by the Dutch and English in 1816 . As a result, however, he developed his own style, especially with regard to the maritime representation of nature. His depictions of storms and the moving sea are typical.
In 1840 a memorial was erected to him in Dordrecht Cathedral.
His sons were Jacobus Schotel, who wrote a biography of his father, and Petrus Johannes Schotel , who also worked as a sea painter.
