Sylvette is the name of the series of portraits of a young woman with pony fringes and a ponytail that Pablo Picasso painted in 1954. Sylvette David also served as a model for sculptures.

The person, their life story

Picasso met Sylvette David (born November 14, 1934 in Paris ), who worked in a pottery not far from his studio in Vallauris , in the spring of 1954 and decided in a short time to paint her portrait. The artist was in a crisis; his partner Françoise Gilot had left him last year with their two children, Claude and Paloma . Over 50 paintings and drawings were created within three months. The 19-year-old Sylvette was accompanied by her fiance Toby Jellinek, when Picasso in his studio model was sitting.

After the failure of her first marriage, she became a believer, moved to England and was baptized in the name Lydia. She started painting at the age of 45. She signed her paintings with her previous name Sylvette David and her current name Lydia Corbett at the same time. She also worked as a ceramist.

The Sylvette type is said to have been an inspiration for the actress Brigitte Bardot in Roger Vadim's film And Always Lures Woman (1956). Picasso's grandson Olivier Widmaier Picasso told the Chicago Sun-Times in 2004 that the model of the large-format sculpture Chicago Picasso was also inspired by Sylvette.

In June 2008, a painting from the Sylvette series sold for 6.9 million Australian dollars (about 4.2 million euros at the time) in Australia.
