The Bergen School ( Bergense School ) was a group of Dutch painters .

The group was created in 1915 in Bergen (North Holland) around the French painter Henri Le Fauconnier . This was influenced in his work by Paul Cézanne . The art of the Bergen School is a reaction to impressionism . The coloring of many of these painters is simple, often gloomy with many shades of gray and brown. Important Dutch people from this group are: Leo Gestel , whose monumental works influenced by Flemish Expressionism often depict nudes , horses and workers, and Matthieu Wiegman (1881–1971), who mainly created religious art and who set the tone in this field in the Netherlands applies. The early work of Charley Toorop also belongs to this style.

An important patron of these artists was the art collector Piet Boendermaker (1877–1947).
