Bernard Essers (born March 11, 1893 in Kraksaän, Probolinggo district in Indonesia , † May 13, 1945 in Doniawerstal ( Skarsterlân )) was a Dutch graphic artist.

Bernard Essers was born as the youngest son of the doctor Barend Maria Diederik Essers and Hiltje Johanna Hermanna van Boekeren.

In 1898 he came to Vienna with his family, where his father continued studying medicine. In 1901 his family moved to Utrecht and in 1903 to Amsterdam. From 1910 to 1912 he attended the Kayser drawing school in Amsterdam. From 1912 to 1914 he studied at the London Royal Academy of Arts .

In 1917 he illustrated two books: “A Wanderer in Love” by Arthur van Schendel and “Deirdre and the Sons of Usnach” by Adriaan Roland Holst .

In 1919 he studied etching with Johannes Graadt van Roggen and Richard Roland Holst .

Essers made several trips: 1920 to Florence , 1925 to Rapallo, 1926 to Brittany , and to New York .

Essers married Kitty Vreede (1899–1979) in 1930. The couple lived in Bergen (North Holland) and Schoorl . Two daughters were born from this marriage in 1931 and 1935 respectively.

In 1923 he was awarded a gold medal for graphic arts during the exhibition on the occasion of Queen Wilhelmina 's 25th anniversary in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. In the next few years he exhibited his works in The Hague, Paris, Chicago, Tokyo, Haarlem and Enschede Amsterdam.

In 1943 he was evacuated to Enschede, two years later he died in Doniawerstal.
