Probolinggo

Probolinggo is a city in Indonesia on the north coast of East Java and at the foot of the Bromo volcano . The provincial capital Surabaya is 100 kilometers to the west. The road from Surabaya to Banyuwangi , from where there is a ferry connection to Bali , leads via Probolinggo. The city has a population of 216,967 people (2010).

The port, which is mainly used by fishing boats, belongs to the city. The fishing industry plays an important role in the city's economy. There is also the artisanal production of ceramics and sarongs .

Probolinggo was a profitable regional center for the refining and export of sugar as early as the 19th century. To this day, sugar is one of the most important products in the region.

The city is also known for the mango trees grown in its area . In the dry season - from July to September - the winds contribute to the pollination of the mango trees. In the past, the grapes grown near Probolinggo also played a role as an economic factor, but today the vineyards only occupy a small area. Local farmers also grow rice , corn , coffee and rubber in the vicinity of Probolinggos .

The city's motto is contained in the word Bestari , an acronym composed of the initials of the following words: bersih (cleanliness), sehat (healthy), tertib (orderly), aman (safe), rapi (pure) and indah (beautiful).

On January 30, 2009, Probolinggo was declared an area affected by bird flu .
