Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst , pseudonym Rik (* December 4, 1868 in Amsterdam ; † December 31, 1938 in Bloemendaal ) was a versatile Dutch artist: painter, illustrator, lithographer , etcher , woodcut artist , designer of posters , leaded glass windows and book covers as well as writer . His works are largely attributed to Art Nouveau . Richard Roland Holst was influenced by the works of Walter Cranes and William Morris .

He was born the son of the entrepreneur Adriaan Roland Holst. His cousin was the poet Adriaan Roland Holst . Richard Roland Holst studied from 1885 to 1890 at the Reich Academy for Fine Arts in Amsterdam . There he was a lecturer from 1918 and its director from 1926 to 1934.

On January 16, 1896, he married the poet and revolutionary Henriette van der Schalk . The marriage remained childless.

Roland Holst promoted collaboration between artists from different genres. He created murals in the Amsterdam Stock Exchange , the office of the General Dutch Diamond Workers Union and the Supreme Court building in The Hague . Later he also designed leaded glass windows a . a. for the Amsterdam City Hall, the Cathedral and the main post office at Neude in Utrecht .

He was friends with the social democratic, later communist poet Herman Gorter and was - like his wife - a staunch socialist .
