Gloria Henry

Gloria Henry (* 2. April 1923 in New Orleans , Louisiana as Gloria McEniry ; † 3. April 2021 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actress . She gained fame primarily through her role as Alice Mitchell in the 145-episode sitcom Dennis, Tales of a Rascal, produced by CBS , and as Beth Forbes in the 1952 western Engel der Haunted .

Life

Gloria McEniry grew up in the so-called Garden District in New Orleans. After graduating from high school, she moved to Los Angeles, where she appeared in various radio shows and commercials under her stage name Gloria Henry. She also played in small theater groups.

In 1947, Henry was discovered by Columbia Pictures and got her first small film role in Sport of Kings . In the years that followed, she played mostly the female lead in B-movies , including crime films, comedies and several westerns starring Gene Autry . Henry had a more important appearance in 1950 as Lucy Johnson at the side of her film parents Una Merkel and William Bendix in the baseball comedy Kill the Umpire . Her best-known film role, however, was that of Beth Forbes in Fritz Lang's 1952 western Angel of the Hunted alongside Marlene Dietrich , Arthur Kennedy and Mel Ferrer .

In addition to her film career, Henry made guest appearances in numerous television series, including 1957 as Helene Chaney in The Case with the Two Revolvers , the first episode of Perry Mason .

In 1959, Henry took on the role of Alice Mitchell in the CBS-produced sitcom Dennis, Tales of a Rascal , which was based on a comic series by Hank Ketcham and of which a total of 145 episodes were produced by 1963. It would be her best-known role. After the sitcom ended, Henry only appeared sporadically in television series and films; this included guest appearances in well-known television series such as Simon & Simon , Falcon Crest and Dallas . Her last appearance as an actress was in the comedy series Parks and Recreation in 2012 .

Gloria Henry was married to the architect Craig Ellwood from 1949 to 1977 , with whom she had three children. The marriage ended in divorce. Henry died at her Los Angeles home on April 3, 2021, the day after her 98th birthday.
