William Bendix

William Bendix (born January 14, 1906 in New York City , † December 14, 1964 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor .

life and career

The son of a musician grew up in his native New York City and left high school at the age of 15. He initially made his way as a porter for the New York Giants and New York Yankees baseball teams and as a waiter before he married in 1927 and was hired by his father-in-law as a manager in his grocery store. As the business during the Great Depression went bust, to Bendix turned to acting and initially appeared in the theater.

From 1942 he worked in film and television productions. In the same year he was nominated for an Oscar for his supporting role in the war drama Wake Island . Films like The Woman We Talked About , The Lifeboat and The Blue Dahlia followed . From 1953 to 1958 he played the title role in the comedy series The Life of Riley .

Bendix died in 1964 of complications from pneumonia . Two stars on the Walk of Fame were dedicated to him.
