action

Bradford Galt begins a new life as a private investigator in New York City after serving a two-year prison sentence for negligent homicide . His attractive secretary Kathleen supports him. During a walk, they both notice that they are being followed by a man in a white suit, who is eventually caught and interrogated by Galt. He claims to be acting on behalf of a certain Anthony Jardine. Jardine was Galt's ex-partner and was partly responsible for Galt's prison sentence, which immediately sparked a certain anger in Galt. But not only he still has a bill with Jardine, but also the art dealer Hardy Cathcart, with whose young and pretty wife Jardine has a relationship. Cathcart, who found out some time ago, has Jardine killed by the hit man Stauffer - the man in the white suit - who makes it look like Bradford Galt is the killer. Completely innocent, a race against time begins for the private detective, because he wants to find the real murderer before the police can arrest him as apparently guilty.

Galt and Kathleen find the trail of Stauffer, who has meanwhile been thrown to death out of the window of a skyscraper by his client Cathcart, so that the private detective's hot trail seems to end again here. However, a little girl had overheard a phone call from Stauffer and reveals the name of the art dealer Cathcart to Bradford Galt. Immediately, Galt and Kathleen set off for the art gallery. At the same time, Cathcart's wife arrives at the art gallery and learns from Galt of the death of her lover, whereupon she faints.

Cathcart threatens the private investigator with a pistol and wants to eliminate the last problem, but is finally shot from behind by his angry wife, who saves Galt's life.

criticism

Lexicon of international film : "Hard 'film noir', whose soundtrack and sophisticated photography contribute to the oppressive atmosphere of an anonymous threat."

der-film-noir.de wrote: “After his semi-documentary spy drama 'House on 92nd Street (1945)', which clearly borrowed from the film noir style , Henry Hathaway's 'Feind im Dunkel / The White Shadow' an exemplary film noir for the time of its creation . "

mordlust.de assessed: "Mediocre film noir with a few good dialogues and a smooth aesthetic that begins acceptable, but then loses itself in a well-constructed story."
