The Garden of Evil is a 1954 American western directed by Henry Hathaway and starring Gary Cooper , Susan Hayward and Richard Widmark .

Three adventurers appear in the small Mexican fishing village of Puerto Miguel. Because of the repair of the boat they came with, they are forced to stay in the place for several weeks. It combines greed for wealth and an addiction to gold. Hooker is a taciturn man who never runs out of pipes, Fiske looks like a shabby card player and Daly is a loud mouthed show-off who likes to play with his gun.
In the local economy the three meet Leah Fuller, who asks the men for help. Her husband was buried in a gold mine tunnel. She offers a thousand dollars to everyone who comes with her to free her husband. The Mexicans in the economy are silent, the three friends ask Leah why nobody seems to be willing to come along for the money. So they learn that the whole area is ruled by Indians. Finally, the three men agree for double the amount, as does one of the Mexicans.
They get horses and ride under Leah's guidance into the unknown landscape that resembles a jungle. The Mexican marks the way from time to time by repeatedly carving signs in trees. During the night Leah tries to make the characters unrecognizable again. Hooker is watching her. Leah fears the men want more than just the money.
The next day they find the Indian campfire, which is still warm. In addition, they repeatedly come across signs that the Indians have left behind. The squad is aware that they are being watched. The men learn that Leah's husband is a mining engineer and has received a map of a high-yield gold mine from a priest. This is located in the sacred area of the Indians, in the "Garden of Evil".
They reach the mine and find John Fuller buried under a pile of support beams. They free him and learn that the Indians had already been there but had not yet killed him. They want to make their way back under cover of darkness. So they ride all night and the day after. When Fuller wants to sacrifice himself for the others and rides back, Hooker wants to go after him, but is prevented by Daly. At that moment Daly is hit by an arrow and dies. The others flee. The next day they find Fuller tied to a cross, dead, pierced by several arrows.
In a bottleneck, the three survivors are attacked again. They realize that someone has to sacrifice himself so that the others can get enough advantage. The two men Hooker and Fiske draw cards, Fiske loses, he has to stay. While Fiske stays behind and shoots several Indians, Hooker and Leah ride away. Then Fiske is hit himself. Hooker comes back alone but finds only the dying Fiske. He waits until Fiske has died in his arms, then he rides away.

Frank Fenton's script was based on a story by Fred Freiberger and William Tunberg.
For lead actor Gary Cooper it was after the meeting point: Paris! , Bengali , Peter Ibbetson , Shipwreck of Souls and Treason in the Jungle is the sixth and final full- length collaboration with director Henry Hathaway and, after Three Foreign Legionaries, his second film with Susan Hayward . The film was shot entirely in Mexico.
The 20th Century Fox brought the in CinemaScope film shot in 1954 in the West German cinemas. In this dubbed version, which is still in use today, Gary Cooper got the voice of Wolfgang Lukschy .
