Hugh Marlowe

Hugh Marlowe (born January 30, 1911 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † May 2, 1982 in New York City , New York ) was an American actor and radio host .

Life

Marlowe was born Hugh Herbert Hipple in Philadelphia. He began his career in the 1930s at the Pasadena Playhouse in California. He has also appeared on Broadway in plays like Arrest That Woman , Lady in the Dark and Laura . In 1974 he worked in the Broadway production All My Sons . As early as the mid-1930s, Marlowe was also regularly active as a supporting actor in Hollywood, but there he mostly only played supporting roles and should never become known to the general public. He had one of his most famous roles in the science fiction film The Day the Earth Stood Still from 1951, which led to further appearances in similar films such as Flying Saucers Attack and Planet of Horror . Marlowe's role as Broadway writer Lloyd Richard in the classic film Everything About Eva at the side of Bette Davis and Anne Baxter also achieved a certain degree of awareness .

From the 1950s onwards, Marlowe could also be seen regularly on television as an actor. In the television soap opera Another World , he played the role of family patriach Jim Matthews from 1969 until his death. Hugh Marlowe was married three times and had three children in total. His first wives Edith Atwater and KT Stevens , the latter daughter of the film director Sam Wood , also worked in the acting business. He died of a heart attack in 1982 at the age of 71 .
