Anne Baxter (born May 7, 1923 in Michigan City , Indiana , † December 12, 1985 in New York ) was an American actress .

life and work

Anne Baxter was born into a wealthy family, the granddaughter of the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright . She was already on stage at school and made her debut on Broadway at the age of just 13 . She continued to work on the stage until she made her film debut for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1940 with a major supporting role in the Western Twenty Mule Team .

The young actress then appeared as the daughter of Joseph Cotten in Orson Welles ' masterpiece The Splendor of the House of Amberson (1942) and she played a French maid in Billy Wilder's war film Five Graves to Cairo (1943). Above all, she slipped into the skin of a “young naive”, with whom the male lead falls in love. 1946 Sophie MacDonald received Baxter for her performance in the film adaptation of the novel by W. Somerset Maugham The Razor's Edge the Oscar for best supporting actress .

Her most famous role was probably that of the unscrupulous young actress Eve Harrington in the classic film All About Eve , for which she was nominated for an Oscar for best actress in 1951 . She then took on leading roles in Hitchcock's crime film I confess (1951) and in Fritz Lang's film noir Gardenia - A woman wants to forget (1953). Another highlight of her career was the role of the ancient Egyptian Queen Nefretiri in Cecil B. DeMille's monumental film The Ten Commandments (1956) with Charlton Heston . When the leading roles began to decline due to age in the 1960s, she focused primarily on roles on American television. In the 1973 Columbo episode, Gossip Can Be Deadly , she played an aging movie star who doesn't shy away from murder. In the 1970s, Baxter played the role of the aging diva Margo Channing , who was played in the film by Bette Davis in the musical Applause, an adaptation of All About Eva on Broadway . Her last role was that of hotel manager in the television series Hotel, based on the novel by Arthur Hailey .

In 1947, Anne Baxter married the actor John Hodiak . The marriage, which resulted in a daughter, was divorced in 1953. She was later married to Randolph Galt, with whom she had two daughters, and to David Klee.

She died completely unexpectedly in 1985 as a result of a brain haemorrhage . She was buried in the Unity Chapel cemetery in Spring Green , Wisconsin .
