John Hodiak

John Hodiak (born April 16, 1914 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania , † October 19, 1955 in Tarzana , Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor .

Life

Hodiak was born in Pittsburgh to Walter Hodiak and Anna Pogorzelec . He was of Ukrainian - Polish descent. He grew up in a Polish suburb of Detroit , Michigan . As a child, he made his first experiences as an actor in amateur performances. His first professional attempt as a radio actor failed because of his Slavic accent, which he then tried to improve through practice. After various jobs, he finally managed to gain a foothold as an actor on the radio in Chicago . There he was discovered by a talent scout from MGM and followed in 1942Hollywood . He played his first small role in A Stranger in Town , directed by Roy Rowland . Alfred Hitchcock finally spotted him and lent him for his film The lifeboat to the 20th Century Fox from. In this film he played his first leading role in 1944 on the side of Tallulah Bankhead . From now on he mainly played leading roles. 1945 in A Bell for Adano with Gene Tierney , 1946 in The Harvey Girls with Judy Garland .

In 1946 John Hodiak married the actress Anne Baxter , with whom he had played in The Sunday Guest. In 1951 their daughter Katrina Hodiak was born. The marriage with Anne Baxter was divorced in 1953. That year he made his Broadway debut with The Chase . The staging, while a failure, resulted in Hodiak receiving the role of Lieutenant Maryk in the theatrical adaptation of Herman Wouk's novel The Caine Was Her Destiny . He played this role for two years. Before filming On the Treshold of Space was finished, John Hodiak suffered a heart attack from which he died at the age of only 41.
